For many years now, I've wanted to learn art restoration. I'm fascinated with the history of art, with the alchemy-likeness of the materials and methods, and just the idea of giving life to those brilliant art.
My father is an upholsterer (I think I've mentioned that before). During college I worked with him doing just that, bring life back to old pieces of furniture. The older the piece, the more I loved it. Eventually, I was offered several furniture painting jobs, and eventually some fine art restorations. I let them know I was not trained, but that I would try my best. Although the clients were always happy, I was not comfortable with the idea that I could be doing more harm than good. So, I stopped taking the work. Still the desire stayed.
Well, recently I've been looking for a new challenge and found that a gentleman in my area is looking to retire after 45 years of restoring art and is willing to teach me. I cannot begin to express my enthusiasm. So, that's what I will be doing starting Monday. Wish me luck.
